Ja Morant is making his return to the NBA after a 25-game suspension tonight but has had a pretty eventful week before his return. Morant is in court for punching a high-school hooper in 2022. During the court proceedings, Morant was asked point blank by the judge if his diamonds were fake, prompting Morant to give a simple answer about his wealth.
"Yeah, I'm a millionaire."
Morant is making $34,005,250 this season, in the first year of a five-year, $197.2 million contract. Unfortunately, he won't see the entire $34 million he's entitled to this season due to his suspension. With his salary, Morant makes roughly $414,698 per game, but he isn't entitled to that money on a suspension.
With 25 missed games already under his belt, Morant has given up at least $10 million of his salary this season. He's still making a lot of money but nobody wants to see money leave their pockets. Morant is suspended purely over his actions, which should help him realize the error of his ways.
NBA players can hurt their earning potential in several ways, with Morant finding that out the hard way. Now that he's back on the court, it'll be exciting to see if we see a new version of Ja in terms of being responsible off the court.
Even though Morant has served a 25-game suspension for flashing a gun on IG live twice in months, he didn't break the law by doing so. The league frowned upon his behavior and decided to make an example out of him. The reason his punishment was so harsh was due to a string of incidents last season. This includes his two gun-flashing moments, his entourage aiming red laser lights on the Indiana Pacers bus, and a punch on a high-schooler who was playing pick-up basketball at his house.
Morant has claimed he acted out of self-defense, explaining how the situation between him and now 19-year-old Joshua Holloway escalated. From a check-ball gone wrong to Morant swinging at Holloway due to aggressive body language and behavior. The court is yet to pass a verdict, so we'll have to wait and see if a guilty verdict in favor of Holloway further complicates Morant's return to the court.
The Grizzlies went 6-19 over the 25 games that Morant missed, with the franchise superstar accepting blame for putting his team in this situation. They're 7.5 games behind the tenth seed right now, showing that the franchise has a long climb after Morant's return to even become a play-in team. They're even 5.5 games behind the Golden State Warriors and three games behind the Utah Jazz ahead of them.
The Jazz could be easily dropped by Memphis, but it'll take a big effort to overcome others. Hopefully, Morant can find his rhythm after returning and lead the Grizzlies to the success they've failed to get this season.
