Ja Morant Received Only One Scholarship Thanks To A Hungry Coach: "Just A Few Minutes Of Watching Ja, You Knew He Was Special"

The NBA is full of underdog stories and Ja Morant is probably one of the biggest we've learned in recent times. The Memphis Grizzlies point guard plays his second season in the association after winning the 2020 Rookie of the Year award, trying to take his team to the postseason. 

It wasn't an easy journey for Ja, who had to work hard to be where he is right now. But, sometimes life is funny, and if you take a look at his path to the NBA, you'll understand that things could have been different for him if it wasn't for a coach that wanted to get some food.

When he was in high school, Morant only received one scholarship because a Murray State coach wanted to eat. He picked a bag of chips and one soda. At that moment, he saw this kid who wasn't initially selected to attend the university and instantly knew he had found something extraordinary. 

"I ordered some Doritos and a soda. I was able to hear the ball bouncing and I went to the gym. Just a few minutes of watching Ja, you just knew he was special. I called my boss right away and said, 'you gotta come up here and see this kid."

You can say it was an accident that Ja was discovered this way, but in the end, things worked out for him and the team. Initially, they scouted a different player, but there was nothing they could do to ignore Morant's exceptional talent.

He's now an NBA player, one of the most promising young stars in the league. Recently, he claimed he feels like a top 5 point guard in the association and that's being his level of confidence since he was a teenager. The future is bright for this player, and the Memphis Grizzlies can't be happier to have him on board.
