Ja Morant’s recent behaviour, both on and off the court, has raised fresh questions about his future with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Morant has been at the centre of a growing number of incidents that have caused tension within the team. The latest situation unfolded after a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he lashed out at the coaching staff following criticism of his performance.
His response to the feedback didn’t sit well with many around the club and led to a suspension from the team. Even after serving that suspension, Morant’s actions haven’t changed much.
Morant also made comments after his return from suspension that echoed a line once made famous by Jimmy Butler. Asked about how he planned to help fix things in Memphis, Morant responded bluntly:
“I want to see me get my joy back from basketball. Wherever that may be.”

The post-game remarks didn’t go unnoticed in league circles. John Hollinger of The Athletic noted how similar Morant’s comments were to those made by Jimmy Butler during his time in Minnesota — comments that eventually led to Butler’s departure from the Timberwolves.
After the Memphis Grizzlies’ defeat to the Detroit Pistons, Ja Morant addressed reporters and was asked directly whether he still found joy playing with the team. His response was brief.
Morant acknowledged that his joy has faded but didn’t provide a specific reason. He did imply, though, that he’d had discussions with coach Tuomas Iisalo about the situation.
Reporter: “Do you think you have the same joy right now we’re used to seeing?”
Ja Morant: “No.”
