Jaylen Brown Accuses NBA Refs of ‘Agenda’ Against Him During Celtics–Sixers Series

Jaylen Brown doesn’t seem very happy after Game 7 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Boston Celtics lost a playoff series to the 76ers for the first time since 1982. After the historic loss, Brown has slammed the game officials for having an “agenda” against him.

On Monday, Brown hopped onto a personal livestream. He played Paul George’s video, highlighting the push from the Sixers star. Brown said that the referees have been calling offensive calls on those same moves when he was doing it.

“[The referees] clearly had an agenda,” he said. “Maybe because I was critical of the referees in the regular season. So, you know, they responded.”

Brown also added that he has inside information about why he was being officiated differently.

“That was the response from the officiating crew. You could clearly tell. And I’ve actually spoken to some referees and they said it was an agenda going into each game. …So anytime Jalen brings his arm up, just from reputation, just call it. Like, but Paul George does the same thing. Jalen Brunson does the same thing.”

Boston blew a 3-1 lead in the series and lost three consecutive games against Embiid’s Sixers. But for Brown, bad officiating could have changed the outcome of the series since the referees officiated him differently.

“Everybody does that when you drive, especially if you’ve got bodies on you. But Philly took advantage of it, and they took advantage of the officiating. It cost us to some degree.”

The Celtics’ season is done for now. But this series might have sown the seeds of future rivalry, and Brown might want to come up with an answer next season.

Offensive calls against Jaylen Brown show an uneven trend

Brown started the regular season with Jayson Tatum, performing at an All-Star level. He led the Celtics to the 2nd spot in the Eastern Conference.

But now that he is putting fresh allegations against the referees, a need to take a look at his offensive foul trends emerges.

During the 71 regular season games, Brown was ranked 2nd in the league for most offensive fouls with 40 in total. However, his offensive fouls saw a significant increase in the playoffs.

In seven games, he was called for a total of 10 offensive fouls in the series against the Sixers, mostly for using arm to create space that Brown alluded to in the video. From the regular season to the playoffs, his offensive fouls increased from 0.56 to 1.43.

Moreover, during the regular season, he averaged 13.2 points on 19.1 drives. This saw a significant fall in the Sixers’ series when he averaged just 8.9 points on 18.1 drives.
