There are plenty of NBA rosters that have talented players, but sometimes those rosters don’t live up to expectations. On his recent appearance on The Old Man and the Three, Jaylen Brown went on to explain why this happens.
Brown ended up pointing out the problem by saying, “In the NBA, it’s a lot of egos, a lot of money, a lot of emotions, like it’s politics. Coaches are afraid sometimes to challenge their top player because if it goes sh*t they might lose their job.”

A team’s most influential player can either reinforce a coach’s message with how they play and respond to situations, or they can completely shift the locker room to disrespect the coach based on their actions as well.
For Brown, being on the Philadelphia 76ers now with LeBron James, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey leads to Philadelphia being the situation he described, but he has told Nick Nurse, “I prefer to be coached.”
His willingness to be accountable should help the entire 76ers roster respond the same way rather than have the team culture fall apart. For other teams, though, this message from Brown should have them looking at their locker room a bit closer.
