Jaylen Brown Says The 76ers Are Tyrese Maxey’s Team

The Philadelphia 76ers assembled a superteam in the offseason by adding Jaylen Brown and LeBron James to a roster that included Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. All these big names coming together led to one big question, though. Whose team is this?

Brown wasn’t interested in talking about who the 76ers’ alpha is before the season, but he has changed his tune now. The five-time All-Star was asked about Maxey’s fourth-quarter brilliance in his press conference after Monday’s 126-107 win over the Chicago Bulls at Xfinity Mobile Arena, and said the 76ers are his team.

“Maxey’s been leading the way, 100 percent,” Brown said, via the 76ers. “He’s been here. This is his team. Him and Joel have been here for a while. So, the mindset has been to complement those guys. I’m finding my footing, but Maxey’s been leading the way for sure.”

Maxey, whom the 76ers selected with the No. 21 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has indeed led the way. Against the Bulls, the two-time All-Star had 26 points (10-15 FG), four rebounds, 11 assists, two steals, and two blocks. Maxey notably racked up 15 points in the fourth quarter to ensure the 76ers came away with a win that saw them improve to 7-1. It’s been a fabulous start to the campaign.

Maxey is now averaging 29.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game for the 76ers in 2026-27. The 26-year-old is their leading scorer by a mile, with Brown second at 20.9 points per game.

Brown is a Finals MVP, Embiid is a regular-season MVP, and James has won just about everything there is to win, but they are comfortable with Maxey leading the charge. The stars had all dismissed concerns about ego before the season, and they’re showing those weren’t empty words.

Among the stars, Brown was perhaps seen as the likeliest to have a problem. The Ringer’s Bill Simmons claimed he went from being the franchise star with the Boston Celtics to the fourth option. It was also noted that Brown hadn’t asked to be traded to the 76ers. The Celtics had stunned the 30-year-old by sending him to Philadelphia for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.

Brown came to the 76ers after averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game for the Celtics in 2025-26. He finished sixth in MVP voting and made the All-NBA Second Team. A lot of players would struggle taking a backseat after a season like that, but Brown has been a model citizen.

“It’s a lot of talent, man,” Brown said. “And we like each other, and we’re just kind of building that chemistry of how we can get this thing to like a well-oiled machine. So, I think we’re taking steps forward every single day. I think we still got a long way to go to being a really solid, great team, but we’ve been able to win some games. We started out the season great, 7-1, and you haven’t seen our best version yet, so that’s a good sign.”

The 76ers will get better, and so will Brown. He put up 25 points (9-15 FG), 11 rebounds, five assists, and one steal against the Bulls. It was Brown’s best shooting night of the campaign, and he also set a new season-high for rebounds. He is getting more comfortable on his new team.

We’ll see Brown and the 76ers in action next against the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
