The Boston Celtics have officially entered a new era of ownership after years of speculation about a potential sale. Bill Chisholm has agreed to purchase the team in a record-breaking $6.1 billion deal, making the Celtics the most expensive franchise in North American sports history ( via ESPN).
With the franchise boasting an NBA-record 18 championships and a roster built for sustained success, Chisholm and his group will be tasked with continuing the Celtics’ dominance. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, two of the league’s top stars, are locked into long-term deals, positioning Boston for more deep playoff runs in the coming years.
Given Tatum’s status as the face of the franchise, his thoughts on the ownership change have drawn attention. The six-time All-Star recently discussed the transition during an appearance on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce.
"A different feel? I don't think so," Tatum said. "The weirdest part was when I found out that the process was going to start… a few days after we won a championship. So that was a weird conversation, but after that, you just start to understand the process and the candidates and things like that."
Tatum also revealed that he met Chisholm in person during Boston’s Monday night win over the Sacramento Kings.
"I actually got to meet Bill (Chisholm) last night. He came to Sacramento. He and his wife seem like great people, and we've had a few conversations. So just looking to add to what we have. Obviously, we have a really good thing going and like where our culture is at."
Fresh off their 2024 NBA Championship, the Celtics are looking to win back-to-back titles for the first time since 1969. They currently sit second in the Eastern Conference with a 54-19 record, aiming to close out the season strong with just 11 games remaining before the playoffs.
