The Boston Celtics felt good about being the NBA’s first repeat champion since the Golden State Warriors.

They had won 61 games in the regular season and were the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference going into the playoffs.

Boston made light work of the Orlando Magic in the first round, eliminating them in five games, which set up a second round showdown against the New York Knicks.

A couple of 20-point comebacks saw the Knicks quickly go up 2-0 in the series, before Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in Game 4.

Jayson Tatum suggests Boston Celtics would have come back against the New York Knicks, ‘I’ve been down 3-2 on the road three times in my career, and I was 3-0’

The Celtics were able to win Game 5 without Tatum to bring the series deficit to 3-2.

However, the Knicks then blew out the Celtics in Game 6 to knock out the defending champions.

Tatum was on ESPN’s First Take and he talked about what would have happened if he never got injured against the Knicks.

“You still got to play the game, and you got to give them credit. They played well, especially down the stretch.

“Jalen made some incredible plays. Mikael Bridges has some incredible plays on defense, and we didn’t play well enough to win. You have to give the team credit.

“We played well enough to win game three and game four, it was a back and forth game, I got hurt, we might have been down seven or eight,” Tatum added.

“And I’ve played this in my head 1,000 times, what happens if I never got hurt.

“I’ve wrestled with that, we go home and they [Boston] won game five, and I’m not going to say what would have happened, but I just know I’ve been down 3-2 on the road three times in my career, and I was 3-0.”

Boston Celtics will be without Jayson Tatum for 2025-26 season

Tatum has been focusing on recovery, but usually an Achilles tear keeps a player out for a year.

The Celtics wouldn’t want to rush Tatum back and risk further injury to their 27-year-old superstar.

Therefore, it’s fair to assume that the Celtics will play it safe and will see how the upcoming season goes without Tatum.

After trading Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, the Celtics are expected to take a step back, but in a weak Eastern Conference who knows what will happen.
