The Buss family has sold the majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter for $10 billion.
Walter now owns the Lakers and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jeanie Buss will continue to serve in her role as Governor of the Lakers, who have the second-most (17) championships in NBA history.
Dr. Jerry Buss, Jeanie's father, bought the Lakers from Jack Kent Cooke in 1979 for $67.5 million.
Head coach JJ Redick and All-Stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James lead the Lakers.
The purple and gold won the 2020 championship against the Miami Heat at the Walt Disney World bubble, behind James and Anthony Davis.
In her first comments since selling the Lakers, Jeanie said he's looking forward to working with Walter.
“The Buss family is deeply honored to have looked after this incredible organization for almost half a century,” Jeanie said. "From the day our father purchased the Lakers, we have been determined to deliver what the City of Los Angeles deserves and demands: a team that is committed to winning – relentlessly – and to doing so with passion and with style.
“I have gotten to know Mark very well over time and been delighted to learn how he shares those same values. For the last four years, Mark has been an excellent partner to us, and we are thrilled to keep working with him to continue the Lakers’ extraordinary legacy.”
Los Angeles was the third seed in the West this year. The team lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs in five games.
James, the leading scorer in NBA history, joined the Lakers in the summer of 2018. He's widely expected to retire with the franchise.
