The Golden State Warriors finally resolved Jonathan Kuminga’s contract saga.

The young forward agreed to return on a two-year, $48.5 million deal, though conversations immediately shifted toward potential trades.

The contract contains a team option, which Jonathan Kuminga previously resisted, and includes provisions allowing the Warriors to trade him as early as January.

However, another important topic deserves attention following this agreement: Kuminga’s role for next season.

Jimmy Butler’s playoff comments highlight Jonathan Kuminga’s versatility despite rotation concerns

Many believe Kuminga no longer fits the Warriors’ starting lineup because Jimmy Butler has filled his expected role.

Since his trade to Golden State, Butler has provided the gravitational pull, one-on-one scoring ability, and rim-attacking skills the franchise anticipated from Kuminga’s development.

Butler addressed Kuminga’s potential during last season’s playoffs, expressing confidence in the former seventh overall pick’s ability to play alongside any teammate.

“He’s a great basketball player…I can play with anybody. He can play with anybody. It’s all about playing basketball the right way,” Butler stated.

When Stephen Curry suffered injury during the series against Minnesota that ended the Warriors’ season, Butler and Kuminga played together.

Kuminga scored 30, 23, and 26 points in the final three games, though the performances couldn’t prevent elimination.

Butler’s assessment presents Kuminga with a challenge to prove what he is really capable of ahead of next season if he wants to gain more minutes.

However, the primary concern about Kuminga centers on his defensive capabilities rather than offensive production.

Steve Kerr identifies defense as key for Kuminga to increased playing time

Kuminga’s offensive flashes won’t be his primary value proposition since Curry and Butler handle most scoring responsibilities.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr explicitly stated that defensive improvement determines Kuminga’s minutes allocation next season.

“With JK, the more he can defend with activity, rebound, run the floor, and then there’s a better chance he has to play. You know, everybody progresses at a different rate,” Kerr explained.

Currently, Kuminga appears destined for a rotational role, primarily spelling Butler during rest periods.

However, addressing his defensive deficiencies could unlock a starting position, particularly if Kerr deploys small-ball lineups with Draymond Green at center.

His ability to meet Kerr’s defensive standards will ultimately determine whether he becomes a valued rotation piece or expendable trade asset.
