The Lakers managed to overcome the Rockets; however, they now face the overwhelming challenge of taking on the defending champions, the Thunder. Ahead of their first game, JJ Redick issued a strong message about his opponents and warned his team about what they must be prepared for.

Despite the absence of Luka Doncic, the Lakers cruised through the first round with a 4-2 series win over Houston. The rise of Luke Kennard, along with Austin Reaves and LeBron James’ consistency, played a key role in their victory. But the biggest challenge lies ahead for Redick’s squad.

Unlike most series marked by rivalry, the Lakers coach showed respect for the opposition while referencing historic data. “Teams that have had back-to-back, 10 or more better net ratings in consecutive seasons, you’re talking about the ’95-’96 Bulls and ’96-’97 Bulls and the ’15-’17 Warriors”, Redick said.

He was indicating that the Thunder are on par with the dynasties of Michael Jordan’s Bulls and Steph Curry’s Warriors. OKC currently has a net rating of 17.8, after posting 12.8 last season. “Thunder is one of the greatest teams ever in NBA history,” Redick claimed. He further added that his team recognizes that and respects the Thunder for it.

The Lakers coach ended by warning his squad, saying, “We know what kind of task we have in front of us.” Defeating the Thunder is evidently a difficult challenge, especially when they are being described as one of the greatest teams in NBA history. The Lakers lost four games to the champions in the regular season, three of which were blowouts.

As uncertainty around Doncic’s return continues, the Lakers will once again rely heavily on LeBron to deliver.
