The Los Angeles Lakers have added a few new faces to their roster this summer, all in an effort to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.

Most of the attention has been on the arrivals of Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, but they have also brought in a promising young player worth mentioning.

That player is Jake LaRavia, who has joined the Purple and Gold after playing his first three NBA seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Sacramento Kings.

Before the Lakers’ 2025 Media Day, general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick spoke to the media. During the press conference, both discussed LaRavia’s arrival in Los Angeles.

Pelinka said: “Jake LaRavia is really good now and has a lot of growth left in him.”

Meanwhile, Redick showed some surprise about the 23-year-old being a free agent.

He explained: “On Jake, who didn’t have his option picked up as a rookie for his fourth year, so probably unexpected that he ends up being a free agent at this time.”

Despite averaging 6.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game in his career, LaRavia is seen by the Lakers’ front office as having significant potential.

JJ Redick calls coaching Jake LaRavia an ‘incredible opportunity’

Managing the Lakers comes with its own set of pressures. The fanbase is demanding, something UConn’s Dan Hurley found out early in his tenure.

Redick, though, seems to be handling things well. He has been supportive of the decision to bring LaRavia into the squad and has spoken highly of the move.

“To get a young player in free agency for a team that is trying to win a championship, it is an incredible opportunity for myself and our player development department to have him continue to grow.

“I’m very high on him, his level of commitment to what we’ve asked of the guys this offseason has been very high,” Redick stated.

While Redick is clearly impressed with LaRavia’s work so far, it is likely that he will start the season coming off the bench.

The Lakers already have plenty of established names competing for starting roles, making it tough for new additions to break into the first five right away.
