The Los Angeles Lakers used the 36th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to select Adou Thiero.

Being a second-round pick, it’s likely that Adou Thiero will get minimal minutes during his rookie year with the Los Angeles Lakers.

However, Thiero could surprise fans as he has already started to impress Lakers head coach JJ Redick in the preseason.

JJ Redick explains why Adou Thiero is ‘insane’

At 6’6″, Thiero is undoubtedly undersized to play at his listed position of power forward in the NBA. But if there’s one thing that could help him, it’s his athleticism.

Speaking of which, coach Redick recently shared a short response to why Thiero’s athleticism has shocked him during practice.

“It’s insane. His head is at the rim, it’s insane,” Redick told the media.

Previously, Thiero compared himself to defensive juggernauts, but as things stand right now, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Lakers start using him as a dunker.

If that happens, it will mean changing Jarred Vanderbilt’s role on the team, which will certainly make former NBA star Gilbert Arenas happy.

JJ Redick gives latest update on Adou Thiero’s injury

Ahead of the 2025-26 season, Thiero missed out on showcasing his talents during the NBA Summer League. Thiero had to sit out the competition after suffering a knee injury.

While the rookie has now returned to training, coach Redick shared a realistic update on when fans can expect him on the court.

“He’s been a participant. We are going to really take our time making sure his biomechanics are correct, so any swelling in that knee, we can shut that off and ensure his long-term health,” Redick stated.

It feels like Thiero will likely stay on the sidelines for the Lakers’ upcoming preseason matchup against the Golden State Warriors.
