Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has faced some challenges with the roster early in the preseason. With several key players suffering minor injuries, headlined by LeBron James’ ongoing issues with sciatica, Redick provided an update on the Lakers’ rookie Adou Thiero, who is yet to make his debut in a Purple and Gold jersey.

“I mean, he’s been a modified participant,” Redick said, while discussing Thiero’s current condition. “He’s been a participant in everything but live. That, I don’t have a good answer for. I know we’re going to really take our time with making sure all of his biomechanics are correct so that any swelling that he’s getting in that knee, kind of shut that off and kind of look out for his long-term health.”

The No. 56 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft has been viewed as a steal in the draft, primarily owing to his incredible defensive instincts and athleticism. Unfortunately, due to a pre-existing knee injury, the 21-year-old forward has been sidelined for an extended period of time, having missed the Las Vegas Summer League, too.

Regardless, the updates on Thiero remain positive. Clips of the forward showcasing his athleticism recently went viral, capturing Redick’s attention as well. Needless to say, the Lakers’ head coach was beyond impressed with the rookie. This could generate some optimism regarding his recovery.

At the current juncture, however, it seems unlikely for the young forward to be ready in time for the Lakers’ upcoming preseason games. With a greater likelihood for him to return during the regular season, Thiero may find himself in a much more demanding position depending on the team’s performance.

Will Adou Thiero Earn A Spot In The Lakers’ Rotation?

One of the priorities for the Lakers this offseason was the acquisition/signing of a capable wing defender. Aside from the players on their roster, such as Rui Hachimura and Jarred Vanderbilt, the Purple and Gold had set their sights on potential upgrades in the position, with names such as Andrew Wiggins and Dillon Brooks (more recently) becoming relevant.

Given that Los Angeles hasn’t succeeded in making these moves, Adou Thiero may have an opportunity to establish himself as the perimeter presence the Lakers need.

Thiero established himself as a reliable defender during his tenure at Arkansas last season. With an average of 1.6 steals and 0.7 blocks per game, the 21-year-old positioned himself as a defensive stopper.

Aside from his defensive upside, the rookie could also be a solid option in transition. Owing to his elite athletic ability, Thiero could easily become the beneficiary of some long-range passes in fast-break situations. Considering that he is adept at going downhill and finishing at the rim, he could be a reliable contributor.

In his final collegiate season, Thiero averaged 15.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, shooting 54.5% from the field. Due to his poor perimeter shooting average (25.6%), it would be difficult for the rookie to earn valuable minutes in the starting lineup currently. However, should the forward find his shot from the outside, he could earn significant minutes in the rotation.
