Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick is in his second season leading the Lakers, guiding a franchise with enormous expectations for a championship, while navigating the long road of an 82-game grind. Redick, a first-time NBA head coach who took over in June 2024, led the Lakers to a 50-32 record and a playoff berth in his first season. He has continued to build a culture of competitiveness in 2025-26, with his team currently sitting fifth in the Western Conference.

But behind the Xs and Os, Redick’s life off the court was shaped by a personal tragedy that touched not just his family but the broader Los Angeles community. In early January 2025, devastating wildfires swept across Southern California, destroying more than 60,000 acres of land, homes and communities, including the rental home where Redick and his family were living in the Pacific Palisades. The loss of their home and community hit hard, and the city is still in the long process of recovery and rebuilding a year later.

In a conversation with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Redick revealed a particularly painful loss for his children: their prized basketball memorabilia collection. Among the items destroyed in the fire was a Luka Doncic Mavericks jersey personally autographed for his older son Knox, which Doncic gave him during a game. There was also a Stephen Curry jersey personally signed for his younger son Kai.

“In all, Redick estimates his boys had eight to 10 jerseys apiece, plus countless basketball cards that they had bought with money saved up from birthday gifts and earned from chores. All of it was gone,” McMenamin wrote in the report published on Monday.

The wildfires caused widespread destruction in Los Angeles, forcing evacuations and the temporary postponement of Lakers games in January 2025 and displacing countless families. One year on, many neighborhoods remain scarred, and while rebuilding efforts are underway, the physical reminders of what was lost are still visible throughout communities that were engulfed by flames. Residents, including Redick and his family, have been part of efforts to help restore local landmarks and support families affected by the disaster.

Despite the emotional toll, the NBA community rallied around Redick’s sons. After the fires, teammates, opponents and NBA stars came together to rebuild parts of the boys’ collections, with players including Curry sending replacement autographed jerseys, and others contributing memorabilia to help restore a sense of joy and normalcy.
