The Philadelphia 76ers scored a huge win against the Boston Celtics on Christmas Day, thanks in part to a 27-point effort from Joel Embiid. That win, however, is going to result in Embiid's next paycheck being $75,000 lighter.
That is what he was fined by the NBA on Friday for making multiple obscene gestures to the Boston crowd during the win.
It was an extremely eventful day for Embiid as he took a pre-game fall during warmups, scored 27 points and could not help himself from taunting the Boston crowd to a degree that resulted in some discipline from the NBA.
It is just another chapter in what has been a bizarre — and at times frustrating — season for Embiid.
The season began with the league investigating the 76ers and Embiid after word got out that he was not planning on playing in back-to-back games. Along with that, he has been limited to just nine games, earned a three-game suspension without pay for shoving a Philadelphia sports writer in the locker room and now has another fine to deal with.
Even after Wednesday's win, and even after wins in four of their past five games, the 76ers are still just 11-17 and find themselves a half-game out of the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference.
