Former Cavaliers and longtime University of Michigan head coach John Beilein is joining the Magic as a senior coaching consultant, he announced on Monday (via Twitter).
According to Beilein, Orlando’s new head coach, Sean Sweeney, asked him to join the team as a consultant.
“Sean has a brilliant future as an NBA head coach, and I’m honored he asked me to serve him and the Magic in this capacity,” Beilein wrote. “I look forward to supporting the coaching staff and contributing any way I can to the organization’s continued growth and success.”
Beilein enjoyed a long and decorated career in the Division I NCAA ranks, coaching the men’s teams for Canisius, Richmond and West Virginia prior to joining the Wolverines in 2007. He became Michigan’s all-time wins leader during his 12 years with the school, compiling a 278-150 record and helping the team make two appearances in the final of the NCAA tournament.
In the 2019 offseason, Beilein landed his first NBA job, signing a five-year contract to be the Cavs’ head coach. His stint in Cleveland was both brief and controversial, however, as he went just 14-40 before resigning in February 2020.
Beilein was hired by the Pistons as a senior advisor in the 2021 offseason and spent the 2021/22 campaign in that role. The 73-year-old has been a college basketball analyst for the Big Ten Network in recent years.
