John Haliburton’s postgame drama with Giannis Antetokounmpo was as surprising as it was shocking. The altercation occurred after the Indiana Pacers came back in overtime to defeat the Milwaukee Bucks 119-118 and win the series. John Haliburton decided to go down onto the court after the Pacers win and get into an altercation with Giannis.
When Haliburton went down on the court, he taunted Giannis with his game towel as the game was ending. Giannis did not take kindly to that and got in Haliburton’s face. Mr. Haliburton later apologized for the altercation saying “I apologize to Giannis, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Pacers organization for my actions following tonight’s game. This was not a good reflection on our sport, or my son and I will not make this mistake again.”
Tyrese Haliburton was also an excellent sport about the situation, acknowledging his father’s actions were wrong. Tyrese said “I don’t agree with what transpired there. Basketball is Basketball and let’s keep it on the court.” It would’ve been easy for Haliburton to defend his father, but the way Tyrese handled the situation was very professional and respectable. The situation could’ve gotten out of hand, but you have to give it to everyone involved for being mature about it.
The way the Bucks lost this game was brutal, and having this situation on top of it makes you feel bad for the guy. Giannis is in for an offseason that will be filled with trade speculation and doubt. It is not just Giannis, but there is a ton of doubt about the Bucks organization after the Damian Lillard injury.
It’s been a rough week for the Bucks, and this offseason isn’t going to get any easier. Will they rebuild? Is there a possibility they will look to trade Giannis? It’s a rough time to be a Bucks fan.
It’s a bad look for the NBA and the Pacers for this to happen. The magnitude and the emotion of your child winning a series is probably an immaculate feeling, but you have to know how to control your emotions. John Haliburton was in the wrong here and should take this as a learning experience, so it doesn’t happen again. Again, Tyrese Haliburton handled this like a pro.
