During an interview with NBA reporter Marc J. Spears of Andscape, Jonathan Kuminga admitted that he doesn’t have “a consistent role” on the Golden State Warriors.
Kuminga doesn’t have a good relationship with Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. The swingman wanted to leave Golden State this offseason and play for the Sacramento Kings.
“I don’t ask [Kerr] about roles because I know what he is going to tell me,” Kuminga said. “I don’t waste my energy. I choose not to ask because nobody is going to tell me. It’s whatever. You just have to find ways to do things when you get out there. Make plays, defend. I don’t have a consistent role. I just play a role where I make sure I play defense and run the floor.”
Kuminga signed a two-year, $48.5 million deal with the Warriors to end his restricted free agency. The second year of the deal, which is a team option, is designed for Golden State — or another team if and when Kuminga is traded — to rip up and construct a new contract next offseason.
Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks for the Warriors last season in 47 games. He was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
“I have too much confidence,” Kuminga said. “And my confidence don’t just come from [inside] because I work towards it and I see how better I get every other year. The sky is the limit. I can’t predict it, but I believe in God and I trust my work and I know I have a long way to go. And one day I’ll look back and like I say, ‘Wow, I came a long way.’
“I’m always happy. I’m working towards being an ‘X-factor.’ Being that guy on both ends when it comes to defense, when it comes to the old offense. So, I just have to find a way to help so we could win a championship.”
The Warriors open the 2025-26 regular season against the Los Angeles Lakers. Kuminga can be traded after January 15.
