Jonathan Kuminga earns big praise from Jimmy Butler in Warriors return

There were concerns that Jonathan Kuminga, an ISO-centric player and non-shooter, would disrupt the Warriors' chemistry when he returned from an ankle sprain on Thursday.

The exact opposite happened. During the Warriors' 130-104 win over the Kings, Kuminga dropped 18 points in just 20 minutes off the bench, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The fourth-year forward did not monopolize the ball and instead shone within the flow of Golden State's offense, cutting to the rim and capitalizing on Sacramento's overplay defensive scheme. In the play below, for example, he freed himself for a backdoor cut since Sacramento's defense was so honed in on Stephen Curry.

Kuminga had three dunks in the fourth quarter alone as the Warriors blew out the Kings to extend their winning streak to six. After the game, Jimmy Butler couldn't stop raving about Kuminga's ability to generate rim pressure and how he helps the offense with his slasher mentality.

"I love that my man came out there aggressive, putting the ball in the basket, high energy, jumping out the gym and dunking the basketball. I want him to be him," Butler said of Kuminga. "To be the best of his abilities, continually be great and help this squad achieve something special."

With Butler and Draymond Green in Golden State's starting and closing lineups, there has been some worry about featuring Kuminga, another non-shooter, in those units. However, Butler doesn't view it that way and believes Kuminga can thrive just by being himself.

Interestingly, Butler stressed that the Warriors must "fit in" to accommodate Kuminga's skillset, not the other way around.

"You come in and play basketball the way you know how," Butler advised Kuminga. "I, myself, and everybody else will make sure that we fit your game."

Kuminga returned the compliment by explaining how Butler makes life easier for the rest of the Warriors, especially with his playmaking.

Butler, Kuminga and Co. will next face the Knicks on Saturday before hosting the Nuggets and Bucks in back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday. The three-game slate will be a big test for the Warriors, who are three games behind the Rockets for the fifth seed.
