Finally, it appears Josh Giddey and the Bulls have a deal.
Per Shams Charania of ESPN, Giddey and Chicago have reached agreement on a four-year contract extension worth $100 million. That brings an end to Giddey’s summer-long run as a restricted free agent and locks him in as the Bulls’ point guard of the future — and the now.
Giddey becomes the first of the big-name restricted free agents to reach a contract extension. The Nets’ Cam Thomas decided on a qualifying offer, while the Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga and 76ers’ Quentin Grimes are still in limbo. NBA training camps start at the end of the month.
Giddey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks last season for the Bulls. He shot 46.5% from the field, 37.8% from beyond the arc and 78.1% from the free-throw line and recorded 30 double-doubles and seven triple-doubles.
Giddey turns 23 in October. He has career averages of 14.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.5 blocks with the Thunder and Bulls.
“Giddey’s performances went to a higher level after the All-Star Break and the trade of All-Star guard Zach LaVine,” Charania wrote. “The 6-foot-8 product shined as a leader of the Bulls, averaging 21.2 points, 10.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists on 50% shooting, including 46% on 3-pointers.”
Giddey played through a muscle tear in the palm of his right hand, Charania noted.
