Most people look their age. After all, aging is unavoidable for any human being. We are mere mortals, and as they say, Father Time is unbeaten. But don't tell that to Philadelphia 76ers Hall of Famer and ABA legend Julius Erving.
"Dr. J" is already 74 years old. Yet when you look at Erving, he certainly looks younger and fitter than his age. In a 2023 interview, The Doctor revealed why his looks defy his age.
"I stimulate my mind. I play Spider Solitaire, and I enjoy that," said Erving. "I partake in some casino activities. There is a mental side to that as well as the luck side. I enjoy playing golf, so on my days that are golf days, I'm really dedicated to getting out and getting the most out of that experience because that's physical, it's mental, it's emotional, and it's fun."
Scientific studies show that mental power has a profound effect on physical health. That's the reason why a stressed-out person is sickly and looks older than his age. However, having an active mind keeps the body healthier. And having fun while doing that can make one appear younger than his age. That's "Dr. J."
A year ago, during the Lakers versus Pelicans 2023 In-Season Tournament semifinals game in Las Vegas, Erving caught the attention of former WNBA star Candace Parker and now Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers, who were doing the TV commentaries for that NBA game.
"I don't even know how old he is, but he's smooth in that suit. I see you, Dr. J," said Parker. Rivers then added to Candace's statement by saying that Erving even 'sits down cool.' Both were not exaggerating.
"He's SMOOTH in that suit... he even sits down cool"

In 2021, videos of an 'old' Erving dunking the basketball went viral online. That caused NBA anchor Kristen Ledlow to ask Dr. J during the 2021 Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony about his ability to dunk the ball in his 70s. But Doc corrected her and told her that the video was shot in 2013 when he was 'only' 63 years old.
Whether he was 63 or in his 70s, dunking the basketball at that age was still an impressive feat. And if you look at that video, Julius was as smooth throwing down that ball as he was sitting on the sidelines in that Lakers-Pelicans In-Season Tournament game.
Some fans call Erving the 'Denzel of the NBA', alluding to the popular Hollywood actor Denzel Washington, who, like Doc, remains young-looking and fit despite their age. But then again, the 'Equalizer' actor is only just 69 years old. "Dr J." will be turning 75 this coming February. That's aging gracefully.
