Once again, it seems like James Harden is going to be on the move. The former MVP has reportedly requested a trade, and the Los Angeles Clippers are exploring their options.
NBA insider Tomer Azarly revealed that Harden wanted a two-year, $80 million contract extension.
The Clippers, prioritizing cap space and flexibility for 2027, decided against said move, prompting the former Houston Rockets star to request a trade.
When asked about that shocking decision, Kawhi Leonard stayed in character, not saying much and showing his support for both parties involved.
"I have no comment on it. I respect his decision, or whoever's decision it is. That's it. He's still going to be my boy. I trust the front office," Leonard said, per Clippers reporter Farbod Esnaashari.
Harden, at 36 years old, has played at an All-Star level for Steve Ballmer's team this season (25.4 PTS, 8.1 AST, 4.8 REB). He can still play at a high level and contribute to a winning team.
Then again, given his current contract, age and history of jumping teams, it's hard to imagine any franchise will be willing to pay a steep price for his services.
The Feb. 5 trade deadline is zooming in, and with most eyes set on the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis, the Clippers may have to settle for a lesser return for the future Hall of Famer.
With no incentive to tank because they don't even own their first-round pick, Harden's request has put them between a rock and a hard place.
