The Orlando Magic signed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a three-year $66 million contract earlier today. He has spent the last two seasons with the Denver Nuggets and was a member of their 2022-2023 NBA championship team. He averaged 10.1 points per game, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists this season. Caldwell-Pope leaving the Nuggets comes as no surprise after listening to what Denver General Manager Calvin Booth said after the NBA Playoffs. “I think we’ll be OK if KCP doesn’t return.” How will Kentavious Caldwell-Pope fit in with the new-look Orlando Magic next season and beyond?

Caldwell-Pope was drafted eighth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. He spent the first seasons of his career in the “Motor City” before stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, and Denver Nuggets. He is a career 11.4 point per game scorer with three rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
Caldwell-Pope joins an Orlando Magic team that is up-and-coming. They finished as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 47-35. It was their first winning season since 2019 and their first trip to the NBA Playoffs since the “bubble” in 2020. They lost in seven games in the first round to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
KCP joins a Magic team led by great young players like Power Forward Paolo Banchero and Center Wendell Carter Jr. Orlando struggled both in the regular season and the playoffs to put the ball in the basket. They were 24th in the regular season in points per game(110.5) and averaged just over 100 points per game in their playoff series. In three of their seven games against Cleveland Orlando failed to crack triple digits on the scoreboard.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will bring championship pedigree to the “Sunshine State” and bolster a sub-par offense next season. KCP is also a fearsome defender and will only improve what was one of the best defensive teams in the league last season. Orlando surrendered the third-fewest points per game in the regular season and was the best defensive team in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
The Orlando Magic improved today by signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Orlando is one of the best teams in the league and will look to make an imprint in the NBA sooner rather than later.
