Kevin Durant did not hold back his admiration for Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg after the youngster played a key role in a big win over the Houston Rockets.
The Mavericks held off the Rockets at home, improving their record to 9-16 in the Western Conference. It is a positive result for a team that started slow but is beginning to find their footing.
Despite breaking some rookie records, Flagg’s transition from Duke has not been completely smooth. He has faced his share of challenges early on.
Lately though, the 18-year-old has stepped up his game. And one person who has taken notice is Kevin Durant.
Durant spoke to the media following the Houston Rockets’ defeat to the Dallas Mavericks and gave his takes on Flagg’s performance.
Durant noted that, despite a difficult start to the season – partly due to Jason Kidd using him at point guard – the rookie is making clear strides in his offensive game.
“Just from watching his film, he’s finally figuring it out. They are also doing a good job of getting him off the ball and letting Nembhard and Brandon Williams control the game.
“He can just float around and be an all-around player. If you play him at the point, you’re limiting his game. He’s playing a well-rounded game.
“He can shoot the jump shot off the middy, he can shoot the three, and he can get to the rim. I love his game.”
While Flagg is undoubtedly the headline name, he is not the only rookie making an impact for Dallas this season.
His game has noticeably improved since Jason Kidd handed the point guard duties to Ryan Nembhard. The two seem to be clicking on the court, and Flagg appears comfortable alongside him.
Nembhard, who went undrafted, has now moved ahead of D’Angelo Russell as the team’s starting point guard and has settled into that role well.
If their partnership continues to grow, they could become a standout duo in Dallas – perhaps even reminiscent of Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash from years past.
