Kevon Looney: Lakers Have ‘Utmost Confidence’ In Luka Doncic

With LeBron James departing in free agency, Luka Doncic is now the unquestioned leader of the Los Angeles Lakers and he is acting as such.

Doncic organized a minicamp in his home country of Slovenia for the entire team, giving them an opportunity to get to know each other and build chemistry ahead of the 2026-27 season. That did not go unnoticed by his teammates as Kevon Looney recently spoke about the confidence the Lakers have in Doncic to lead them this season.

“For sure. When you got a guy like Luka going into the game, you feel like you can beat anybody,” Looney said after practice on Saturday. “He’s gonna be the best player on the court probably every night that we’re out there and we feel like if we do our job, he’s gonna do his job and he’s gonna finish the game. He’s one of the best closers in the league, so we have the utmost confidence in him and we’re trying to earn his trust so he has the confidence in us as well. It makes our job a lot easier when you know you got the best player on the floor.”

While Looney has only been teammates with Doncic for a short time, the Slovenian star has been as advertised for him.

“I’ve been playing against him for a while, so nothing has really shocked me,” Looney said. “But just seeing it up close every day, his vision, his ability to get to wherever he wants on the court when he feels like it. You kind of know that going against him on the scouting report, but seeing it every day and seeing him do it in practices and in games, it just raises your level of respect for it. And for me as a screener, just getting him open, getting him easier looks. He’s a guy that can create shots for everybody.”

Looney is the oldest player of the Lakers so he will have some leadership responsibilities as well and will be a valuable resource to Doncic. Considering Looney is the only one with championship rings on the team, he knows what it takes to get over that hump and clearly feels Doncic and the Lakers have that capability.

Luka Doncic happy with Lakers’ roster depth

Doncic was involved in the process of building the Lakers’ roster this past offseason, and one thing he is happy about is the depth the team will possess.
