The Sacramento Kings entered the NBA offseason with a key decision to make as to whether they wanted to keep their core together and chase a playoff spot next season or begin a rebuild.
They ended up choosing to keep their core of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine together and they have also made notable additions to their roster in Nique Clifford, Maxime Raynaud and Dennis Schroder to help them contend for a playoff spot next season.
While the Kings did decide to keep their core together, they could still elect to make some moves before the start of next season.
With this in mind, Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Shea recently released a mock trade that would see the Kings send Sabonis to the Detroit Pistons for a trio of players.
In the trade, Shea has the Kings sending Sabonis to the Pistons in exchange for Tobias Harris, Ron Holland II, Jalen Duren and a 2026 and 2029 first-round pick.
This would be a massive trade for both teams involved, especially the Kings as they would add more young talent to their roster to set themselves up better for the future.
For the Kings, swapping Sabonis for Duren gives them a younger center option who is a great inside scorer, rebounder and defender.
Sacramento would also land a young forward in Holland II who showed out during the Las Vegas Summer League this offseason and could be a key piece to their future alongside Keegan Murray, Duren and Keon Ellis.
For Harris, he would give the Kings another veteran forward who is a solid scorer, though his fit in the starting lineup next to DeRozan is a questionable one and would likely require Sacramento to either find a new home for DeRozan or find a third team in this trade to take on Harris.
Either way, this trade would give the Kings two young players to continue to build around for the future and could be a smart play if Sabonis does not want to commit to Sacramento long term.
