While many around the NBA expected the Sacramento Kings to begin a rebuild after trading De’Aaron Fox and missing the playoffs last season, they have instead elected to keep their core together and chase a playoff spot this season in the loaded western Conference.
For the Kings, they will enter the new season with their core of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine leading the way despite all of them being in trade rumors.
Sacramento also made some notable additions to their roster this summer as they selected Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in the 2025 draft and landed Dennis Schroder in free agency via a sign-and-trade with the Detroit Pistons.
It is clear that the Kings are looking to make a push for the playoffs this season and they could elect to make more moves to upgrade their roster before the start of the regular season.
With this in mind, Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley recently released a mock trade that would see the Kings send second-year guard Devin Carter to the Denver Nuggets for a young forward to upgrade their wing depth.
In the trade, Sacramento would send a package of Carter and a 2027 second-round pick to Denver for Peyton Watson.
For the Kings, moving on from Carter after selecting him 13th overall in the 2024 draft would be a though decision, though they could elect to do so due to the abundance of guards on their roster.
Carter showed flashes of being a solid role player for the Kings last season and during the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League but swapping him for Watson would allow Sacramento to add a much-needed forward to their roster.
Watson is a solid scorer and defender who would give the Kings a solid option off the bench behind DeRozan and Keegan Murray.
Last season, the 22-year-old forward averaged 8.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 35.3% from three.
Of course, Watson has been a key piece off the bench for the Nuggets over the past few seasons which could cause them to shy away from this trade, though they are in desperate need of adding another guard to their roster behind Jamal Murray.
Because of this, this trade would fill holes in both teams’ rosters heading into the new season as both franchises try to make a run in the West this season.
