The Memphis Grizzlies won a close game against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, but the biggest story of the night was a post-game scuffle between Mavericks guard Klay Thompson and Grizzlies guard Ja Morant.

Most people saw the game between the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies as a matchup between two struggling teams in the Western Conference. It ended up being one of the best games on Saturday night, but it made headlines after Klay Thompson and Ja Morant had a post-game scuffle.

Thompson had an impressive 22-point night, while Morant was still dealing with an injury on the sidelines. Despite that injury, Morant was still on the bench, encouraging his teammates and talking trash to the opponents. Morant is known as a player who does not back down from any negativity, whether it’s from his peers or the media.

It seemed like Morant struck a nerve after the game because Thompson was also barking back at him. This has been a longstanding rivalry dating back to the days when the Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors were beefing with each other during and after the 2022 Playoffs.

Thompson did not hold back with his comments about Morant

After the final whistle was blown, Morant and Thompson got into a verbal scuffle. That led to Morant visibly calling Thompson a “bum.” It was the type of scuffle that most people associate with the Grizzlies and the Warriors when Thompson was there alongside his longtime teammates Draymond Green and Stephen Curry.

Now that Thompson is playing for the Mavericks, it looks like there is still no love lost between Thompson and Morant, who was the most vocal when talking trash against the Warriors back then.

Thompson himself is not one to back down from any kind of trash talk, which led to him responding in a post-game interview. He made sure to verbally tussle with Morant because it seems the four-time champion is disappointed with Morant not playing games.

“With Ja, he’s a funny guy with no accountability. He has a lot to say, all the time… Nothing of intelligent depth. It was really just him running his mouth. He’s been running his mouth for a long time. It’s funny to see him running his mouth when he’s on the bench. Story of his career so far, he always leaves us wanting more,” Thompson said about Morant in a fiery post-game interview.

“It’s just been a lot of other stuff getting in the way of that. We need that in the NBA; we need our best players out there. When you’re a star, it comes with a great responsibility. I hate to see that go to waste.”

Morant can prove Thompson wrong with a productive return

Morant sustained a calf strain last week, which will put him out of action for the next couple of weeks. This is not an abnormal development for Morant, as he always struggles with his injuries during the regular season.

It has hurt his productivity and status among the league’s best point guards. He tends to be a what-if story because he struggles to maximize his time on the court, whether due to injuries or off-court issues.

Thompson made some fiery comments about Morant’s attitude and injury history, which might be frustrating for Morant, his teammates, and the fans. However, Morant should let his game do the talking moving forward, as he can prove Thompson wrong. The Grizzlies’ star guard will be sidelined for a while, but he could return with a renewed competitive fire.
