Klay Thompson believes the Dallas Mavericks have one star who could achieve All-Star status this season.

A lot of the talk surrounding the Dallas Mavericks this season has been about rookie sensation Cooper Flagg.

Flagg has earned comparisons to LeBron James early in his career, even before he stepped foot on an NBA court.

However, Flagg’s debut was overshadowed by VJ Edgecombe, who put up a historic performance for the Philadelphia 76ers.

While Flagg’s presence is great, there is another Dallas Mavericks star who can take the leap to being an All-Star this year, at least according to Klay Thompson.

Klay Thompson backs PJ Washington to realize ‘All-Star’ potential

Klay Thompson spoke to CBS11 Texas ahead of the Dallas Mavericks’ season opener against the San Antonio Spurs.

When asked which player will surprise fans with a breakout year, Thompson named PJ Washington, citing his All-Star potential and his elite two-way skills as a big reason for his predicted success.

“That’s tough. There’s so many great players on this roster. I think PJ has All-Star potential. I really do… I really believe PJ can be one of the better two-way players in the NBA.

“There’s not many players who can do what PJ does, as far as guarding 1-5, scoring from the outside, scoring on the interior, rebounding on both ends of the floor.

“Very excited for him. I think he has another level to get to.”

PJ Washington proved himself with efficient outing against San Antonio Spurs

Despite the wealth of talent available to them, the Dallas Mavericks did not play well in their season opener against the San Antonio Spurs.

However, PJ Washington was a highlight for them, as he put up 17 points on efficient shooting, something the rest of the team wasn’t able to match.

Washington also managed to register a block against the oversized Spurs squad, despite their offensive presence. Washington proved his $90 million contract was worth it with his performance.

If Washington can shoulder both an offensive and defensive load for the Mavericks next season, he could be a legitimate candidate to make the All-Star team.
