Klay Thompson's Potential Signing With BIG3 League After Retirement Amuses Fans On Social Media

Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson has carved out an impressive career for himself in the NBA. While contemplating a life after the league, Thompson recently mentioned that he could even consider joining the up-and-coming BIG3 league.

While speaking on the "Showtime Podcast with Michael Cooper" on the subject, he said:

"Absolutely, especially with that four-point ball. That gets me excited. I want the BIG3 to go international. You know that would be so fun to see the BIG3 go overseas and do a little tour.”

Thompson highlighted aspects such as the four-point zones and the global popularity of 3-on-3 basketball as appealing enough to be considered an opportunity. However, fans on social media also had their own thoughts about the four-time champion's statement.

"Y'all playing with Klay like he doesn't have another 3-4 years in the league if he wants," stated one fan, acknowledging Thompson's efficacy as a player even today.

"Those 4PT shots are going to start wilding with KT," added another, highlighting the guard's elite sharpshooting skills.

"He will cook as a shooter in the BIG3. Nobody can shoot in that league," claimed another fan, seeing the potential for Thompson to succeed in the format.

"Klay about to hit 11 threes in a game with no backboard," boasted another user.

"Just catch and shoot 4-pointers. Nice lil side quest," noted one user, aligning with Thompson's familiar playing style.

One hyped user shared, "Klay to the BIG3 would be wild. Splash vibes even after the NBA."

While some fans viewed the potential transition positively, other users took a different route.

"Why not...keep the dough rolling in...entertain the fans," suggested one user.

When factoring in Thompson's current age and form, one user said, "As soon as next year."

Another built upon this comment and added, "So next year."

One user took a more direct approach and stated, "His career is donezo."

While the consensus seems to be in support of Thompson joining the league, potentially teaming up with former NBA players Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson on the Miami 305, others seem to have a more sardonic outlook.

This could be attributed to the guard's form as of late. After suffering successive injuries between 2019-2021, it was clear that Thompson wasn't the same player anymore. Still, he remained effective, even helping the Golden State Warriors win their fourth title in 2022.

Since then, he has experienced a steady decline in performance. While effective in short bursts, the 35-year-old simply isn't as consistent as he used to be.

Last season, he averaged 14.0 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting 41.2% overall and 39.1% from three-point range. Considering his averages of 17.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in the 2023-24 season, Thompson saw a significant drop-off, potentially lining him up for another season with limited production.

On the flip side, however, the upcoming year could also witness a resurgence from the four-time champion. As part of an immensely talented Mavericks roster, Thompson could rise to the challenge of being a member of a title-contending squad.

While this could also be perceived as optimism on Dallas' behalf, having Thompson be a crucial contributor on offense, especially in Kyrie Irving's absence, will be vital to the team's success.
