Knicks bolster bench with underrated signing

The Knicks own the No. 2 offense in the league but are also ranked last in bench scoring. Tom Thibodeau's team has managed only 20.4 bench points per game, which is nearly half of what the second units of the Magic and Cavaliers produce every night.

New York desperately needs an infusion of scoring in the second unit to ease the starters' workload and ensure Jalen Brunson and Co. don't get fatigued in late-game situations. On Sunday, the Knicks began that process by signing veteran guard Landry Shamet to a one-year deal.

Shamet initially earned a spot on the Knicks roster with an impressive showing in training camp. However, he suffered an untimely shoulder injury during the preseason, leading to the Knicks waiving him.

The Knicks smartly did not allow Shamet to sign elsewhere by roping him into their G League team when he recovered from injury. Last week, Shamet played a key role in the Westchester Knicks' NBA G League Showcase victory, averaging 10.7 points and 3.5 rebounds across three games, providing veteran leadership and timely bench scoring.

Thibodeau is said to be a fan of Shamet's game and wanted him back on the roster. During training camp, the Knicks coach pointed to his previous experience playing with Mikal Bridges and Cameron Payne as part of the Suns. Thibs also hailed Shamet, Payne and Miles McBride as the perfect trio to lead the Knicks' second unit.

"Versatility, the ability to play multiple positions," Thibs had said of Shamet, via New York Post. "Can think on his feet, can execute, can really shoot the ball. So those type of guys — I like the speed of our second unit a lot. I think when you look at Cam, Deuce and Landry, they complement each other really well, and so I like their perimeter play together."

Shamet has averaged 8.7 points while shooting 38.4% from three over his six-year NBA career. The 27-year-old is also an underrated defender capable of guarding three positions.
