Thursday’s news is a major blow for the Knicks, who are off until Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday. With no timetable for Robinson’s return, New York’s frontcourt depth will likely enter the series a little thin.
After burning through the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers in back-to-back sweeps, the Knicks are still likely to be the heavy underdogs in the Finals.
They’ll play the winner of the Western Conference Finals battle still raging on between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, the top two teams in the league this regular season.
Regardless of who wins that series, the Knicks are entering the Finals with a major size advantage. Victor Wembanyama is a cheat code inside for the Spurs while the Thunder have multiple seven-footers they can play simultaneously.
Injuries have hampered Robinson’s career, but he’s been an elite offensive rebounder this season. The Knicks’ third-string center, Ariel Hukporti, played just under 500 minutes throughout the regular season.
New York may look to him at times if Robinson misses games in the Finals.
