The Mikal Bridges extension is quickly becoming the topic of a lot of conversations for the New York Knicks. 2025-26 will be the final year on his current deal, valued around $24.9 million. One executive did not think there was much to this matter.

Keith Smith of Spotrac went around NBA 2K26 Summer League collecting news and notes on all of the NBA teams. It is there where he got a Knicks executive to open up about the Bridges situation in New York.

“We hope to get something done," the Knicks front office executive told Smith. "When you make the commitment to trade for a player like we did with Mikal, you do it with the intention of them being on the team for a long time."

Bridges extension is a must for the Knicks

The executive had a strong point. The Knicks certainly did not get a bargain when they made the push to acquire Bridges. They had to pony up some real assets.

New York sent four unprotected first-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets in their acquisition of the two-way wing. That included 2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031.

For those that need a further refresher, there was more beyond that too. The 2025 first-round pick from the Milwaukee Bucks was also included in this deal. As was an unprotected swap in 2028.

The draft capital sent out made the players in the deal feel like an afterthought by comparison. Which, in all fairness, they are in this case.

New York has enjoyed their connections to Giannis Antetokounmpo during the offseason. Some have suggested that has caused the delay in getting Bridges locked up long-term. The Knicks would be wise to ensure they not squander the opportunity to retain their own star in the process.
