The New York Knicks are carrying high expectations into the 2025–26 season. Early on, they have backed it up with results, starting 8-4 and holding the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
New York is aiming to take the next step and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. If they manage to get there, it will likely be on the back of their superstar point guard, Jalen Brunson.
Now in his fourth season with the Knicks, the 29-year-old has firmly established himself as the face of the franchise and one of the most efficient scorers in the league. Throughout 11 games this year, Brunson has averaged 28.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists while shooting 46.7% from the field and 36.9% from three-point range.
Brunson’s momentum was interrupted last Wednesday in a 124–107 loss to the Orlando Magic. Late in the fourth quarter, he drove to the basket and landed awkwardly, immediately exiting the game and heading to the locker room. He was later diagnosed with a Grade 1 right ankle sprain and was seen leaving the arena on crutches and in a walking boot, a concerning development for the Knicks.
Brunson was ruled out for Friday’s game against the Miami Heat and again for Monday’s rematch in Miami, marking his second straight absence. However, there are encouraging signs regarding his recovery. On Monday, less than a week after suffering the injury, Brunson was spotted on the court participating in shooting drills with no walking boot in sight. His presence suggests he is trending in the right direction.
“Jalen Brunson is shooting on the court in Miami pregame — a good sign for his recovery,” reported Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.
If his progress continues, Brunson could return to the starting lineup as soon as Wednesday, when the Knicks face his former team, the Dallas Mavericks.

Brunson’s return would be a major boost for a New York squad that has shown early promise but will need its leader healthy to sustain a deep playoff push. He spent four seasons with the Mavericks after being selected in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Villanova before signing with New York.
Since joining the Knicks in 2022, Brunson has thrived by combining elite footwork, crafty shot creation and a knack for taking over in crunch time. His ability to control tempo, break down defenses and deliver in key moments has made him one of the most dependable guards in the league. He has earned two All-Star selections, two All-NBA honors and has consistently ranked in the top 10 in MVP voting. Now, Brunson is focused on leading New York back to the NBA Finals and bringing a championship to the city.
