Not so long ago, the Dallas Mavericks had two of the best scorers in the league.
With Luka Doncic at the helm and Jalen Brunson mostly off the bench, they even made it to the Western Conference Finals.
Ultimately, they didn't consider Brunson a star and let him walk to sign with the New York Knicks. Then, they sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in the most inexplicable trade in NBA history.
Until now, Brunson had taken the high road about how the Mavs could've had him and Doncic for the long run. In an interview with The New York Post, he finally addressed the situation.
“Well,” Brunson said. “They made decisions and I’ll leave it at that. They made their decisions.”
Brunson isn't the one to beat on a dead horse, so he had a rather classy response to a business decision that was pretty hard to justify.
Granted, he wasn't the superstar he is nowadays, but he was a proven winner at every previous level and was clearly an ascending star; he made the most of his extended playing time in his final year in Dallas.
Brunson's move to the Knicks was met with skepticism, mockery and even nepotism accusations, given his ties to Leon Rose and that his father, Rick Brunson, worked for the team.
Fast forward to today, and he's the undisputed king of New York, delivering the franchise's first NBA championship in more than five decades.
The Knicks had Brunson at a discount and finally went back to the top, and the Lakers now have Doncic for the next decade.
The Mavs, on the other hand, just fired their coach and won 26 games last season. Yikes!
