The New York Knicks made a shocking decision to begin their offseason on Tuesday as they made a major announcement regarding head coach Tom Thibodeau.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Knicks announced that they are firing Thibodeau and will now begin their search for a new head coach.

This is a surprising move by the Knicks, especially after Thibodeau helped lead the franchise to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000 but they clearly believe that it was time for a change on the sidelines.
With Thibodeau’s firing, there have been many names thrown out as potential replacements for the former Coach of the Year winner including Michael Malone and Dan Hurley.
While both coaches could be great fits in New York, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg believes that only one coach would make this firing make sense.
“The obvious choice for the #Knicks, in fact the only one that would make this firing make sense, is Jay Wright. I’d be surprised if he wants to do it, but that’s the only way this makes any sense to me at all,” Greenburg posted on X on Tuesday.

I’d be surprised if he wants to do it, but that’s the only way this makes any sense to me at all.
Wright coached 21 seasons at Villanova, where he helped lead the university to two championships in 2016 and 2018, which both featured current members of the Knicks.
Of course, Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart were all coached by Wright at Villanova and with the success they had in college, Greenburg believes that firing Thibodeau could allow them to go after Wright this summer to reunite him with his former players.
Despite this, Wright officially retired from coaching in 2022 and he has not made any comments on wanting to return to the sideline, especially at the NBA level.
While that may be the case, if the Knicks were to call him and offer the position of their head coaching job with Brunson, Hart and Bridges all on the roster, Wright may consider a return to the sidelines though it is highly unlikely.
