Knicks legend breaks silence on Tom Thibodeau firing

Since releasing Tom Thibodeau from his head-coaching role, the New York Knicks have received significant criticism. After all, Thibodeau had just led his team to the Eastern Conference Finals.

To make matters worse, the Knicks have struck out on multiple coaching targets in recent days. As such, New York's fan base has a right to feel aggrieved with the current happenings within their favorite team.

Still, Knicks legend Carmelo Anthony has provided a level take regarding Thibodeau's release. He noted that the front office would have considered the move long before the postseason began.

"Everybody else thinks that that just happened overnight," Anthony said during a recent episode of his "7PM in Brooklyn" podcast. "That ain’t just happened overnight. That’s been a part of the conversation behind the scenes going on, observations, analyzing, really scouting Thibs. Whatever it is, he was under a microscope for a period of time. So it ain’t just happened."

Anthony is still a respected figure among Knicks fans. His take on Thibodeau's release will likely carry some weight.

Furthermore, Anthony is also adding context. It's too easy to assume that New York made a knee-jerk reaction to the team's postseason elimination. In truth, the decision to part with Thibodeau was likely well-planned and thought out.

Nevertheless, the Knicks are at a crossroads. The roster is good enough to be among the league's elite. However, a new coach must quickly insert a philosophy and find a way to get the best out of the current core. Otherwise, New York may find itself back in a transition period.

If that does happen, firing Thibodeau will look like a disaster, and even Anthony's reasoning won't be enough to get the fan base on the organization's side.
