The offseason has begun for the New York Knicks after they were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
New York had a terrible start to the series as they lost both games at home at Madison Square Garden to fall into a 2-0 hole that they were never able to escape.
Despite this, the Knicks were able to extend the series to six games but they were unable to advance to the NBA Finals as the Pacers eliminated them in Game 6.
Now the Knicks have a crucial offseason ahead of them as they try to upgrade their roster around their core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.
While the Knicks have some decisions to make regarding their roster this summer, they made a major decision regarding head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Knicks fired Thibodeau on Tuesday despite him helping lead them to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000.
BREAKING: The New York Knicks are relieving Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach, sources tell ESPN. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first East Finals in 25 years, made playoffs in 4 of 5 years and led Knicks to consecutive 50+ win seasons for first time since the 1990s. pic.twitter.com/B7w8KhoEcF

This is a massive decision by the Knicks and one that comes as a surprise after he led them to four playoff appearances in five seasons and consecutive seasons with 50 or more wins for the first time since the 1990’s.
Charania also reported that the Knicks believe that a new voice will serve as the focus for the organization’s next steps as they pursue a championship.
Of course, Thibodeau’s coaching style has been highly criticized over the last few years as many have placed the blame on him for playing players too much in the regular season, causing them to underperform in the playoffs.
This likely also factored in New York’s decision to fire him and they will now search for a new head coach to help them return to championship form next season.
