The New York Knicks lost one of the glue guys from their championship run.
Mitchell Robinson got a three-year, $47.4 million contract to join the Boston Celtics, potentially even starting for Joe Mazzulla's team.
With Ariel Hukporti also leaving for the Philadelphia 76ers, Mike Brown's team is extremely thin at the backup center position.
That's why they might turn to someone who's pretty familiar with their coach. According to Bleacher Report insider Jake Fischer, the Knicks are expected to sign Kevon Looney.
“We’re expecting Kevon Looney, the veteran big man who won [three] championships in Golden State, several of those with Mike Brown, the Knicks head coach, who was a Warriors assistant for several years. I’m expecting them to come to an agreement at some time in the near future,” Fischer said on a livestream.
Before coaching the Sacramento Kings -- and ultimately the Knicks -- Brown spent six seasons with the Warriors.
He was a part of the coaching staff when Looney helped the organization win three NBA championships with his physical screening, versatile defense and dominant rebounding.
Of course, a lot has transpired since, and Looney isn't the player he was in the Bay Area.
The New Orleans Pelicans declined his $8 million option for this season, and he averaged just 2.8 points, 5.6 boards and 1.6 assists per game in 14.7 minutes a night, per Basketball Reference.
Nevertheless, the Knicks don't need him to play heavy minutes or be much of a difference-maker on offense.
Instead, he can give them a strong interior presence and a true stopper behind Karl-Anthony Towns at a fairly reasonable price.
