Knicks’ Mikal Bridges changes number as new chapter begins

Aside from bringing back OG Anunoby on a new contract, Bridges is another former Defensive Player of the Year candidate. He averaged 19.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists this past season, shooting .436 from the field and .372 from three-point range. However, Bridges was a first-team All-Defense player during the 2021–22 season with the Phoenix Suns before being traded. He played 82 games that year, only averaging 14.2 points. His career-high 21 points per game came between both Phoenix and Brooklyn, but the Knicks may have an even more prominent role for him in store.

Role Changes and Expectations

Bridges will essentially take Donte DiVincenzo’s starting minutes, allowing DiVincenzo to come off the bench and act as a key rotational piece next season.

Contract and Future Outlook

Mikal has two more years left on his contract before becoming a free agent in 2026. He will count only $23.3 million against the cap and $24.9 million for the 2025–26 season. This is a solid price point for a player who can be the difference between a championship and an early exit.

Durability and Reliability

Bridges has played a minimum of 72 games over six professional seasons. The Knicks can lean on him as an everyday player, and he’s capable of playing 35 minutes per game if necessary.
