The New York Knicks entered March third in the Eastern Conference and sit just 2.5 games behind the Boston Celtics for second place. They rank fifth in scoring (117.6) but are in the middle of the pack on the other end, where they rank 19th in defensive rating (114.1)

With just 22 games to go in the regular season, the Knicks are hoping to boost that defense with a low-risk upside play by reportedly signing a recent first-round pick.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania , New York has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with MarJon Beauchamp, a 2022 first-rounder who adds versatility and effort on defense.

Beauchamp has yet to fulfill his potential since the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him 24th overall three years ago from NBA G League Ignite, although he retains much of that upside.  The 24-year-old plays off the ball and is known for his on-ball defense and hustle, with the size at 6-foot-7 to pick up plenty of rebounds.

The small forward started 11 games as a rookie and averaged 13.5 minutes, 5.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.4 steals per game, numbers he has not topped in the two seasons since. However, his three-point shooting has improved a tick to a career mark of 35.7%.

Beauchamp was traded from the Bucks to the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 6 for Kevin Porter Jr., and the Clippers waived him after three games to make room for Jordan Miller.

The Knicks appear to be the latest team to take a chance on the talented wing, and he should at minimum be able to provide depth behind Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, Miles BcBride and Landry Shamet at little cost.
