Knicks signing Matt Ryan to training camp deal

Free agent wing Matt Ryan has agreed to a non-guaranteed training camp contract with the Knicks, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.

Ryan, 28, spent most of last season with New York, first on a non-guaranteed deal and later a two-way before being waived on March 1. He appeared in 19 games but logged just 68 total minutes, scoring 28 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

Ryan has played in 82 NBA games since debuting in April 2022, carving out a reputation as a perimeter specialist. He owns a career three-point percentage of 40.2, which will always keep him in the conversation when teams are looking for extra shooting.

Because Ryan now has four years of service, he’s not eligible for a two-way contract. If he’s going to make the Knicks’ 15-man roster, it will have to be on a standard deal.

That will be a tough climb, given the team’s hard-cap restrictions and a crowded camp competition. Landry Shamet, Malcolm Brogdon, and Garrison Mathews are all expected to battle for what likely amounts to a single roster spot unless New York creates flexibility through a trade.

Ian Begley of SNY.tv was first to report earlier this week that Ryan was in the Knicks’ sights for a possible camp invite.
