It's been a tough couple of days for the New York Knicks and their fans.

First, the team lost to the Indiana Pacers in the conference finals in six games. Then, Tom Thibodeau was fired as head coach despite coaching the team to the conference finals for the first time since 2000.

Thibodeau was hired by the Knicks in 2020. He went 226-174 in the regular season and 24-23 in the playoffs and won the 2021 Coach of the Year Award.

Thibodeau, who has won the Coach of the Year Award two times, was fired by Knicks president Leon Rose.

“Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,” Rose said in a statement. “This pursuit led us to the decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we’ve decided to move in another direction. We can’t thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach."

The news cycle didn't sleep in New York one day after Thibodeau was fired, as Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported on Wednesday that Knicks All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns has "undergone treatment on his bruised left knee and to repair ligament damage on his left finger."

Towns finished the 2025 postseason with averages of 21.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.7 blocks in 18 games against the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and Pacers. He shot 48.8% from the field, 35.1% from 3 and 84.5% from the foul line.

A five-time All-Star, Towns is under contract for the next three seasons, with a player option for 2027-28. He is eligible to sign an extension this offseason that could add another two years to his deal.

It will be fascinating to see if the Knicks sign Towns to an extension this summer. Small forward Mikal Bridges is eligible for an extension as well.
