Knicks waive John Konchar, sign Tony Bradley

The Knicks are doing some roster housekeeping as training camp gets underway.

New York waived veteran wing John Konchar and center N’Faly Dante on Wednesday, then signed veteran big man Tony Bradley to an Exhibit 9 contract, the team announced.

Konchar’s departure is the notable part. The 30-year-old had been viewed as a legitimate candidate for a regular-season roster spot after signing a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 deal. But Konchar has been away from the team this week because of a personal matter, and the two sides mutually agreed to part ways so he could spend additional time away, according to Ian Begley of SNY.

Konchar spent six-plus seasons with the Grizzlies before being traded to Utah last February. He has never been a big scorer, but carved out an NBA career by doing a little bit of everything, including rebounding, defending multiple positions and occasionally knocking down a three.

Bradley, 28, now gets his opportunity. The eight-year veteran split last season between the Pacers and Hawks, averaging 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 41 appearances.

New York also briefly signed forward Toby Okani to an Exhibit 10 contract before waiving him, opening the roster spot needed to add Jaden Akins on a two-way deal, as relayed by Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors.

It’s late-September roster maneuvering. But for Konchar, at least, there’s considerably more behind the move than basketball.
