Bill Simmons was once again in the headlines, making a take that went viral, this time about Dallas Mavericks guard D’Angelo Russell. Star point guard Kyrie Irving immediately came to his teammate’s defense against Simmons.

Kyrie Irving is not a stranger to being vocal when he’s given the opportunity. Since Bill Simmons is one of the basketball community’s most vocal analysts, Irving has had many run-ins with people like The Ringer’s founder and CEO.

They are now clashing with each other again, but this comes after Simmons criticized the new Dallas Mavericks player, D’Angelo Russell. Simmons pointed out that Russell is like a friend that people love having around for a day, but would hate to stick around for a long time.

As a teammate who wants to protect Russell, Irving made sure to respond on X, calling out Simmons.

Irving defends Russell from Simmons’ criticism

Since Russell is the de facto starting point guard for the Mavericks because of Irving’s injury, most people in the organization want to give him confidence. Irving being outspoken about Russell’s critics is a good sign, as it shows he has full faith in his teammate.

While some people, like Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves fans, might agree with Simmons’ point, it can look like they are not giving him any chance of proving himself in Dallas. Russell is a talented player, and that could be maximized during the 2025-26 season with the Mavericks.

He had a tough campaign in the 2024-25 season, only averaging 12.6 points across his stint with the Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets. However, he is not far removed from his 18 points per game average back in the 2023-24 season.

On X, Irving made sure to respond to Simmons’ take, calling him out for not being brave enough to say that in person.

“Oh Bill, you would never say this to Dlo in person, and we both know it,” Irving said alongside a GIF of Omar, a character from the hit TV show, The Wire.

Russell can prove himself in the 2025-26 season

The Mavericks have a promising season ahead of them in the 2025-26 season. Anthony Davis is back and ready to lead as a superstar. However, he is not alone because the Mavericks have a deeper roster than most people expect.

They also have the #1 overall pick from the 2025 NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg, who is ready to establish himself in the league after impressing in training camp.

While they would prefer to have Irving healthy and ready to play for the Mavericks, they will have to wait for him to recover from the torn ACL. In the meantime, Russell is the starting point guard alongside Klay Thompson in the backcourt.

After a tough few years, Russell can become a reliable player again in Dallas, and it is time for him to prove himself within Jason Kidd’s system. He is already familiar with many teammates, including Thompson and Davis. With that familiarity, he could be an overlooked player who can surprise people like Simmons.
