In a moment of deep reflection, Kyrie Irving shared his profound connection to the late Kobe Bryant , detailing the impact of the Lakers legend both on and off the court. During a recent interview, Irving took a thoughtful pause before speaking on a relationship that clearly transcended basketball.
When asked about his fondest memories of Kobe as a person, Irving immediately focused on Bryant’s inspirational character and generosity of spirit.
“Oh man!…. Kobe as the man was VERY inspirational, very loving and very compassionate,” Irving stated. “Always had an open heart for those who wanted to follow his knowledge and wisdom that he always wanted to pass on what he learned.”
For Irving, having Bryant as a mentor was a gift he remains eternally grateful for. “I was just more than grateful that I could have him for a mentor as far as many years that I did.”
Irving also offered a message of support to Kobe’s family, emphasizing the responsibility he feels in upholding his mentor’s memory. “Shout out to Vanessa and all the girls… they’re very strong so I have to be strong as well and we just want to carry his legacy forward. That’s really what it’s about.”
Irving finds comfort in the enduring nature of their spirit.
“Him as a spirit is… ETERNAL. He’s everywhere right now and Gigi’s everywhere right now and all the people that transitioned that day helped us out,” he shared. “So, they’re never far; so it’s constant remembrance, but I’m VERY grateful that I got to spend time with him and learn from him as a man.”
When the conversation shifted to Kobe as a player, Irving simply laughed, suggesting the countless stories could fill a book.
“As a player, I can go on and on [laughs],” he said, before concluding with a heartfelt, direct message. “So shout out to ‘Bean’ Bryant… I love you more than life itself and miss you a lot.”
Irving’s words paint a picture of a relationship built on genuine mentorship and affection, highlighting how Kobe Bryant’s influence continues to inspire those who knew him.
