The Dallas Mavericks have been active this offseason since selecting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick at the NBA draft. They’ve signed Daniel Gafford to a contract extension, solidifying their frontcourt depth with Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II. The Mavericks also signed one-time All-Star D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $13 million deal, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
With how active the organization has been, many have taken notice of the potential the team has. They have an elite big man in Davis, who can wreak havoc on both ends of the floor. They also have the best prospect (arguably) in Flagg. Plus, the team has reliable role players to help the core players as they try to contend for a championship.
However, not everyone is ready to make predictions about what the Mavericks can do for the 2025-26 NBA season. Two-time champion and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Alex Caruso revealed his thoughts on the Dallas team in an interview with Andrew Hughes of Sporting News.
“We got to see how they’re gonna be,” Caruso stated. “Kyrie [Irving]’s still hurt. He might be out the whole year. He might come back late. A lot of that depends on him.”
Caruso stated that since the Mavericks won’t be playing at their best when the upcoming season begins, it’s too soon to predict what might happen with them. Last season, Irving suffered a torn ACL, which prevented Dallas from staying competitive late into the regular season.
The good news is that his ACL repair was successful. The one-time champion is now in rehab and has been seen walking well. Also, the Dallas Mavericks star was on the court in his recent live stream on Twitch.
While the Dallas Mavericks wait for Kyrie Irving’s return, they made sure to sign a decent point guard in place of the injured star. The Mavericks believe that D’Angelo Russell is the perfect player to take over the point guard position as Irving rehabs.
However, one-time NBA champion Nick Young isn’t a fan of the signing. According to Russell’s former teammate, the Mavericks won’t be able to have fun in the locker room with the 6-foot-4 point guard in the roster.
“Can’t have fun. Can’t trust a motherf**ker in the locker room,” Young said.

Young’s reasoning is related to the history he shared with Russell with the Los Angeles Lakers. While the point guard was a rookie, he posted a video of the 6-foot-7 forward talking about cheating on on his then-fiancée, rapper Iggy Azalea.
The issue blew up and resulted to Young’s separation from Azalea. Since then, the former NBA player hasn’t moved on.
