The Los Angeles Clippers looked their age on the court against the young Utah Jazz. The oldest team in the league, with an average player age of 30.7 on its roster, couldn’t keep up against Utah’s younger and faster roster.
Kawhi Leonard, embroiled in investigations for salary cap circumvention, played as if he hadn’t touched a basketball in years. Bradley Beal, one of the Clippers’ new offseason acquisitions, scored a measly five points in 20 minutes of game time. The veteran who averaged 30+ PPG (points per game) was missing in the season opener.
The Clippers lost 129-108.
The Clippers didn’t have a single player score 20+ points, even though they have a roster of veteran and proven scorers on and off the bench. The hopeful comeback after the brutal first quarter, where the score was 43-19, didn’t come to fruition with the team’s shooting being off and multiple turnovers being committed. New signing, Brook Lopez, was one of the bright spots for the offense when he swished five three-pointers.
The oldest roster in the league was lost on defense all night long. The matchup with Jazz center Walker Kessler and forward Lauri Markkanen proved to be a fatal mismatch. Utah’s big men ran around with ease to score 20+ points each to smother the Clippers’ playoff-experienced roster.
Utah’s high-energy offense outpaced Los Angeles to catapult them to a win.
The veteran team had a rough opening statement to the league. One of the more hyped up teams in the offseason by their new signings, they looked as if they wheeled out these aging stars onto the court. Game one of 82 started not ideally, but the team hopes this was a one-time blunder.
The Clippers play their home opener against the Phoenix Suns on October 24th.
