The Los Angeles Lakers waived Jordan Goodwin in the offseason, despite him being a strong performer.
One of the most surprising decisions this offseason was the Los Angeles Lakers choosing to let Jordan Goodwin go in the offseason.
The Lakers had to waive Goodwin to sign Marcus Smart because they had converted Goodwin’s two-way contract to a full-time deal.
The Lakers tried to keep Goodwin through a consolidation trade, but things didn’t work out for them, and they made the difficult decision.
Goodwin delivered a strong performance against the Lakers in their first preseason game. And he did even better tonight, especially compared to Marcus Smart, for whom he was waived.
Against the Los Angeles Lakers, Jordan Goodwin dropped 24 points, along with six assists and four rebounds.
In fact, Goodwin had just one point less than both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, who both led the Lakers in scoring with 25 points each.
However, Goodwin’s numbers look even better when compared to Marcus Smart, who made his LA Lakers preseason debut.
It was a debut to forget for Smart, who played 20 minutes and registered just one assist and two personal fouls during the game.
Smart is by no means an offensive juggernaut, but for him not to even attempt a shot in a game isn’t a good look, even in preseason.
After his last two outings against the Lakers, it’s hard to understand why the franchise would let him go, given what he can bring to the team.
Jordan Goodwin, waived by the Lakers in the offseason, is up to 22 pts and 6 ast on the night and just skipped down the court after he got a corner 3 to rattle around the rim and go down as PHX continues its second-half surge.

On the Phoenix Suns, Jordan Goodwin finds himself in a strong position. Given that the Suns are trying to rebuild, Goodwin can attempt to improve his game in a pressure-free environment.
On top of that, Jordan Ott will continue to give players who impressed him in preseason more opportunities, as he tries to determine what the Suns’ ideal rotation is.

If Goodwin manages to earn a spot in the Suns’ rotation going forward, he could stand to benefit and earn a big-money contract in the future.
While there is no expectation to become a star, Goodwin has a chance to cement himself as a solid role-player in the NBA.
